A Shared world of D&D One-Shots

What's it all about?

As a games club we meet once a month and the demand for D&D games is high. It's a lot of responsibility to have one or two DM's shoulder all the work and miss out on playing themselves. Likewise we know that players like to develop and grow their characters - one-shots are fun but you don't want to be rolling new characters each and every month.

SO.. Tales from the TrollSkull Tavern is our initiative to let you the player enjoy taking your character through the levels but at the same time let the DM's sit on the other side of the games masters screen and play as well.

We have assembled a crack-team of five Dungeon Masters who will take turns running one-shots each month...with a difference. Instead of you making new characters for each DM's game you will keep your character and each month level them up. DM's will rotate and get the opportunity to play themselves.

More often than not you'll start your adventure in The TrollSkull Tavern - an adventurers favourite in the North Ward of Waterdeep on the Sword Coast in the land of Faerûn (Forgotten Realms). But make no mistake - you adventure could take you literally anywhere!

We're developing a framework of locations and NPCs so whilst each game is unique, there are familiar threads running across all game session regardless of the DM running the game.

A big thanks to Rich, Beth, Sam, Sven and Chris for volunteering their time. Soon we'll be posting details on character creation so if you have book a seat on a club D&D game keep your eyes peeled! More to follow soon.

Character Creation

If you have claimed a seat at one of our Tales from the Troll TrollSkull Tavern games you should join the D&D Trollskull Tavern What's App Sub group in the community. Here you'll receive a link invite to the DNDBeyond Campaign where you can create your character.

We are using DNDBeyond as a way to track multiple characters across several games. This allows DM's to see exactly who in in each game and tailor adventures around that groups strengths and weaknesses.

So get started - head to dndbeyond.com and create a character.

Below are our character creation guidelines.

1: We're using 2024 rules
2 Use point buy to create your characters abilities.
3: Follow the screen shots below for setting to adopt in dndbeyond.

4: Start at level 3, your DM's will advise you if you need to level up before your game or not.

Loot Boxes

As a way to help all our DMs track and distribute magic items fairly and in a fun way we have developed the Loot Box system. Now instead of finding specific magic items in game players now earn Loot Boxes AKA Trollskull Tokens as rewards for quests, boss fights, discoveries, or story milestones. Each box represents the opportunity to claim one magic item of that rarity or lower.

Now on a 'Meta-level' how you came across these items are narratively up to you. You may have discovered them on a vanquished enemy, it may have been given to you my a relative or family member etc.

Do keep in mind we're now actively play testing this system and may adjust / tweak it is we find any bugs or you uncover any overpowering exploits! (now there's a challenge for you)

How it works
We'll track how many boxes of each rarity you have and then you may do one of two things.

1: Exchange a box for an equivalent rarity of magic item from the Dungeon Master's Guide (you should be able to access on DNDbeyond). You do this in the Trollskull Whats App chat, so we can record the exchange.

2: You can exchange 6 boxes of one level for a single box of the next level up - then exchange that per step 1. Exchange rates shown below.

Keep in mind
You can only have three items that require attunement active at any one time. So before you grab all the good stuff, remember - you many not be able to use it all at once. Don't worry there are plenty of items that don't require attunement - be sure to read item descriptions carefully.

Loot Box Rarity

  • Common - Player can trade for any Common Magic item.

  • Uncommon - Player can trade for any Unommon Magic item.

  • Rare - Player can trade for any Rare Magic item.

  • Very Rare - Player can trade for any Very Rare Magic item.

  • Legendary - Player can trade for any Legendary Magic item.

Players can combine lower rarity boxes into higher ones, but Legendary boxes cannot be created through trading — they must be awarded by the DM.

Box Exchange Rates

  • 6 Common Boxes = 1 Uncommon Box

  • 6 Uncommon Boxes = 1 Rare Box

  • 6 Rare Boxes = 1 Very Rare Box

Very Rare boxes cannot be exchanged for Legendary boxes. Only DM's can award those bad boys!
